Hakuoh didn't understand why Ruby started following him.

Ruby wasn't supposed to be here. Ruby was the Queen's dog after all, and the forest was not somewhere he usually had a business in. But there was Ruby anyway, all smiles and an obnoxiously happy hum with a nonsensical beat.

“Why are you here?” Hakuoh asked. His question broke Ruby's hum and broke Ruby's smile.

Ruby's eyes widened instead in genuine surprise, as if Hakuoh should already know why he was there.

“We're friends aren't we?” Ruby responded with a question of his own.

There was of course, a part of Hakuoh which wanted to say no, they weren't. Ruby wasn't anyone's friend and Hakuoh didn't fully understand why Ruby thought he was his.

There was a bigger part of Hakuoh however, who said nothing and just sighed.

The bigger part of Hakuoh who continued on his path in the forest, watching Ruby smile and hum the continuation of the same obnoxiously happy tune with a nonsensical beat from the corner of his eyes.

Ruby's visits became more and more frequent and at one point, he had brought Hakuoh flowers.

“Why flowers?” Hakuoh asked.

“Mmm? They're pretty, so,” Ruby answered with a grin.

Hakuoh wasn't sure if that explained anything, but he took the flowers from Ruby anyway, a little too roughly, perhaps and held it slung on his shoulder.

Still, Ruby bounced his side, happy that Hakuoh took it and ignoring Hakuoh's thankless silence.

Hakuoh found himself watching Ruby a little more and when Ruby noticed, he began to skip by Hakuoh's side instead of the controlled steps behind him which Ruby always seemed to struggle with.

Ruby's humming had a tune to began to make sense, but Hakuoh wondered if he had simply gotten used to it.

The more Ruby skipped alongside him, the more Hakuoh wanted to pin him against a tree, a wall, the forest floor or something.

The more Ruby hummed the more Hakuoh wanted to silence him with a kiss, even if he didn't mind the tune anymore.

Hakuoh didn't understand why.

It was another time when he had finally given in and kissed Ruby. It was rough, probably rougher than he intended. He was a little annoyed, a little pleased and a whole lot confused. There was nothing romantic about the kiss and Ruby tasted a little like the iron of blood but Hakuoh chose to ignore that. Hakuoh also chose to ignore how some of that iron of blood might be his as his tongue scraped past Ruby's sharp teeth.

When they pulled apart, Ruby's eyes were surprised. Still, it took him but a few seconds to drew a smile across his face again.

“Hakuoh~ what was that?”

Hakuoh shrugged, as if Ruby should have known all along.

“We're friends.”

He said simply.

Ruby hummed a little bit of the obnoxiously happy tune. He kissed back, but Ruby's kiss was a lot more chaste, a lot more child-like, a lot less like the Ruby Hakuoh expected.

“We're friends.”

Ruby repeated, as if that explained everything after all.
