It was when she was sleeping did Taemin realise that Jongin no longer wore her chastity ring.
He didn't know when did Jongin take the ring off - it must be after their first time, because back then the silver on her left ring finger distracted him.
Taemin knew Jongin's grandmother had given her that ring when she was nine.
Taemin knew that Jongin's grandmother might have a heart attack if she found out Jongin had taken it off. She didn't have to, he could say, but by this point he knew that to her, she had to.
The ring would tell lies if she continued to wear it, she would say, but prettier and better, and she can't live like that.
"Why are you staring?"
Her voice took him by surprise. She watched him back, sleepy half-lidded eyes framed by her hair, falling in messy, dark brown wave.
When he first saw her, dancing in her school production of Swan Lake he would've never imagined her this way: sleepy and messy and bare in the creaky bed he bought from IKEA and assembled poorly.
He had never thought she would look at him as she ran her hand down his chest in the middle of the night.
Not that he didn't want all that.
He just knew pretty Juilliard ballerinas with silver chastity rings don't date guys who dance under the bridge and live in crappy apartments.
Or at least, he thought he knew.
"Nothing," he said, because he wasn't sure what to tell Jongin. Should he ask her about the ring? Should he tell her that he fell in love with her all over again?
But he knew those would be empty words, designed to fill the silence of his tiny room, too small when he was alone but too large when he was with Jongin, the space between them too vast for him.
So he kissed her gently, and brought their bodies together. A poorly assembled bridge between them that would collapse in the morning.
But for now it would have to do.
