The way Ernie breathe next to him was beginning to annoy Bert.

It was always Ernie who kept him up at night, even if it wasn’t in words and songs and Bert Bert Bert but with his breathing.

Maybe he preferred that: the words and the songs and the Bert Bert Bert because it was noisy enough to drown out the breathing and Bert’s thoughts that came with it.

He knew that he wasn’t being fair. Ernie had always told him everything while he didn’t. Ernie honestly called him his friend. Bert dishonestly kept what he thought of Ernie to himself.

It was love, he realised, even without the words and the songs and saying Ernie’s name over and over again. It was love, he knew, though he didn’t want it to be.

Because they would always just be friends.

He sighed and frowned.

Ernie breathed and smiled.

do u ever think. maybe ernie knows of bert's unrequited love, he knows everything about bert, because they're best friends, but he keeps pretending to be oblivious even though it eats at his conscience because it's better than the alternative, letting bert know he'll never feel the same way

and he knows how hard bert tries to keep a secret, and he debates with himself whether it'd be better to get it out in the open someday so that bert can try to move on and not spend the rest of his life hoping and pining but instead being able to find someone else, but it's not the right time yet, and he doesn't want to bring it up before bert is ready (if he ever is)

and it's the reason ernie never brings a girl home, and maybe it's why he hasn't had the heart to get into a serious relationship in a while, because he knows it would break bert's heart and only hurt him every time ernie brings her up and what kind of bff doesnt introduce their SO, and it would kill bert to meet her

imagine bert and ernie lying in their beds, facing opposite sides of the room, bert thinking about ernie while knowing he's awake because he can just tell, ernie's breathing is always a certain way when he's asleep, and he thinks it's a little strange that ernie isn't being very talkative tonight even though he's still up

and ernie is awake because he can't stop thinking about what he should do about bert, feeling guilty and like a piece of shit for knowing bert's secret but being too scared to do anything about it. and it makes him selfish, too, that it might be better for bert if he were to end it now but not wanting to lose his best friend, and he knows bert is still awake because he also knows how bert sounds when he's asleep... and he wonders if bert is thinking about him
