Sehun watched as the Kai he knew died.

He watched as Kai took a blade for someone else, someone more important than he was. Someone more irreplaceable than he was, at least on paper.

He watched as Kai's body fall and he remembered wishing so very strongly that Kai's body would disappear in those black smokes he had often seen carry Kai away, to reappear again somewhere else as if he had always been there.

He watched as Kai bled instead and he watched Kai breathe for the last time.

The Kai Sehun knew was dead.

His Kai was dead.

Sehun watched, perched on the top of the stairway, the figure of Kai walking in through the door of their dormitory. He was accompanied by two men in a labcoat, but other than that, Kai was well. Alive, brand new and alive, dressing exactly like his Kai did the day of his death, ready to continue the time that their Kai left off.

But all Sehun could see was the imperfections. All Sehun could see was how this Kai was not his Kai. This Kai did not move with the grace of a dancer.

And when this Kai saw him, looked up and smiled, all Sehun could see was a poor imitation of the Kai smile he was familiar with.

Sehun had seen enough. He collected himself up and found his room, slamming the door behind him.

The next time he saw this new Kai was in the practise room, teleporting from one point to another with ease. In this, this new Kai was perfect, but of course he was. This was the important part. This was the part of Kai they deemed important enough to copy into a new being.

Not the part that danced.

Not the part that smiled.

And definitely not the part that loved Sehun.

Over the weeks, this new Kai have tried approaching Sehun several times with a shy smile and small wave. Sehun have ignored every single one of them, shrugging this Kai off in hallways and kitchens and even during their missions.

It was in the dance studio that he met this Kai again.

"I didn't know you dance,” this Kai said.

Sehun wanted to shout at him, to tell him in all the worst ways he could tell anyone anything, releasing every bit of anger her had.

Instead, he openly scowled at this Kai.

This Kai have long gotten use to Sehun's contempt so even in the face if it, his expression did not change from his easy, casual smile. Sehun still hated that smile. Still saw nothing but what it lacked and how different he was.

You dance well,” this Kai continued anyway.

It was at this that Sehun glared at this Kai. Finally, words left him, the first thing he ever said to this Kai and it was filled with bitterness.

"You used to dance better.”

This Kai's face changed then, eyes widening, smile fading. Sehun wasn't quite sure what expression this Kai's face twisted into for he wasn't familiar with the facial movements of this Kai at all.

He wasn't sure what to expect, how would this Kai react now.

"I know,” this Kai said, sadly. Sincerely. “I’m sorry.”

Sehun didn't expect that at all.

He pushed past this Kai, leaving him in the studio alone.

It was Suho who pulled Sehun aside after a mission, just like the good leader he had always been. Suho was concerned, and after years of knowing Suho, Sehun knew it was genuine. But Sehun could also see traces of annoyances on Suho's face and Sehun knew those were genuine too.

He didn't blame Suho for it. He did just near jeopardise a mission by ignoring what this new Kai said and not supporting him when he teleported in and out. He had no excuse for it - none of he wasn’t experienced to know, none of how their battle patterns were off and different because none of that was true - in fights, after all, they had copied Kai perfectly. Sehun did not have an excuse because he knew that he ignored this Kai simply did not want to acknowledge this Kai.

If he was in Suho's place, he would be less concerned and more annoyed.

"I know it's hard for you Sehunnie,” Suho said. “But you have to try to work with him. No one is asking you to be best friends with him. Just to work with him.”

Sehun didn't respond. He didn't even meet Suho's eyes, focusing instead of his own knuckles.

"I don't want to lose you too,” Suho said. He moved to hold Sehun's hand gently, and Sehun let him although he didn't react.

It was three days later that Sehun found this Kai dancing in the dance studio.

This Kai was clumsy and his movements followed a video. It was amateurish at best.

But he was concentrated and paid every attention to his movement, pausing when he got something wrong and doing it over. He didn't even notice an annoyed Sehun at the door until Sehun spoke.

What are you doing?”

His movement stopped all too suddenly before he faced Sehun again, surprised.

“I'm just trying --”

Were you trying to be him?”

This Kai breathed heavily. He looked at Sehun, wide eyed and unsure of what to say next.

Sehun wasn't quite sure what got into him as he grabbed this Kai's wrist and drew him close.

He wasn't sure what got into him as he leaned in to kiss this Kai, a violent kiss, almost a fight, that was both familiar and alien to him.

He wasn't sure why this Kai responded anyway, matching his kisses with his own. They drew away only to pull together again and again and again.

By the time they were done their mouths were sore and they both struggled for air.

We did that, many times before,” Sehun said weakly.

"I know,” this Kai said, sadly yet sincerely yet again. “I’m sorry.”

Sehun kissed him again to contain his sadness and his anger and his everything. No, not to contain, but to spill it unto this Kai, waves at a time.

This Kai took it all and gave Sehun back his own kisses.

New but familiar and old but strange.

Sehun found out that this Kai was truly into his dance after finding him there on many other n nights. Although Sehun still frowned at how clumsy this Kai was and how that was nothing like his Kai, Sehun started to find that he was growing to be okay with it.

This Kai could never replace his Kai, Sehun knew. Realised from the very beginning.

But this Kai loved dance the same way his Kai did.

And this Kai let Sehun kiss him after dance practise, the way his Kai did.

That was where their similarities end. That was where their similarities that truly mattered end.

This Kai didn't kiss like Sehun's Kai and didn't taste like Sehun's Kai. And the more they kissed the more apparent this was to Sehun.

Although Sehun began to not mind that so much now.

And when they part, this Kai would smile at Sehun. The smile was less of an imitation of Sehun's Kai. The smile turned itself on a different direction from the Kai smile that Sehun knew.

Although Sehun hated to admit that he started liking it now.

This Kai was someone new with a familiar face and it was better this way.

It was during a mission, when this Kai was knocked over a sky scraper by a steel titan did Sehun jump in after him, using his power of wind to boost them up.

It was in hindsight stupid, because Sehun realised just as he called out to this Kai and held on to him, just about ready to summon his wind, that this Kai like every other Kai before him could could teleport. Soon his black smoke enveloping them both and bringing them back to the top of the building, this Kai's body under Sehun's.

Sehun watched as Xiumin and D.O. just about subdue the titan, freezing it and breaking it to pieces. The rest of the team were chasing after the man who was apparently controlling it – someone with a sort of telekenetic power who had been using it to terrorise town and steal, the giant being only one of his contraptions.

This Kai then laughed.

"What?” Sehun asked with a frown. He realised then he hadn't heard this Kai laugh before and there he was, under him laughing and Sehun could feel the way he breathed with his laughter right there.

"It's nothing, it's just,” this Kai paused. This Kai smiled. “That was the first time you called me by name. 'Kai'.”

And he realised then too, that this Kai was right. He was suddenly embarrassed by his position on top of this Kai, embarrassed by how close the other boy's smile was and how his heartbeat resonated against him. Sehun scrambled up to his feet and dusted himself.

"We should catch up with the rest,” Sehun said, his back facing this Kai. “I'm sure Xiumin and D.O. could manage here--”

"Jongin,” this Kai said.

Sehun turned back to see that this Kai have stood up and was smiling right at him again.

"You can call me Jongin,” he spoke. “I'd never be Kai to you, right? Can I be Jongin?”

"That's stupid,” Sehun grumbled, but as he walked over, to the edge of the building ready to life himself of, he turned back.

"Are you coming Jongin?” he asked.

Jongin grinned back at him and teleported away.

"Show off,” Sehun mumbled to himself.

Sehun woke Jongin up early the next day, or rather, at 11AM, which always had been early for Kai and apparently for Jongin too.

“Where are we going?” Jongin asked as he sleepily slipped on a sweater, for it was autumn and it was getting cold and Sehun supposed, Jongin felt cold too.

“You’ll see,” Sehun shrugged, a non-committal reply.

“Isn’t is a little cold for bubble tea?” Jongin asked in the queue, nonetheless, he was smiling, amused, even as he had to keep his ungloved hands in his pockets for warmth.

“It is never too anything for bubble tea,” Sehun said. “What do you want? It’s my treat.”

Jongin seemed to have thought a while.

“I’ve never had bubble tea,” he said. Sehun knew this was true. Jongin never had bubble tea even though Kai drank it with him every week. “What did Kai usually get?”

“Plain earl grey, no sugar,” Sehun answered. He knew this order by heart. “You want that?”

“No,” Jongin chuckled. “I want chocolate.”

“That’s my flavour,” Sehun said with a frown.

“Even better,” Jongin replied with a smile.

Sehun felt that he smiled back.

He took Jongin to walk along the river and then took him to a cinema. He let Jongin chose the movie, and Jongin chose a French film. Sehun crinkled his nose.

“Not what Kai would choose?” Jongin asked, his smile still present, easily gracing his face.

“Exactly what Kai would choose,” Sehun sighed.

After the movie, they went to a park. Sehun grabbed Jongin by the collar and took him behind a large tree. It was dark by then, the typical short day of November, but the sky was clear even though there was no moon to be seen and Sehun didn’t particularly care about stars.

He kissed Jongin there, passionately and with wanting. His hand roamed Jongin’s skin, feeling a scarless chest, much unlike Kai's, before moving down to unbuckle Jongin’s trousers and finding giving his hand to roam down to Jongin’s half-erect cock, stroking it quickly and roughly.

Jongin laughed again when they parted from the kiss. It was a breathless sort of laughter, his tanned skin flushed red as Sehun moved from his cock to his ass. “Did you do this with Kai?”

“No,” Sehun said, leaning in to kiss Jongin again. “This is just you.”

“I’m glad you’re getting along with Kai now,” Suho pulled him aside again, ever the concerned leader. The tad bit of annoyance was still there, but to be fair, Sehun thought, he would have been annoyed too.

After all, he had just gone out of his way to give Kai a quick kiss in the middle of a fight.

“But --”

“Concentrate?” this time, Sehun responded. “I know.”

He was perched on the top of the stairway as he watched Jongin walk into their dormitory, having just gone out to buy the second volume of his French sci-fi book about death and another book by his favourite Japanese author. Jongin started it on the way, Sehun noticed, as one of the books were opened, his finger in between two pages to mark where he had read it up to.

Jongin looked up to Sehun and smiled.

Jongin’s smile was Jongin’s own and he couldn’t really see Kai’s in it anymore.

Sehun smiled back and waved to his Jongin.

Jongin watched as Sehun died.

He watched as Sehun fell and for a while, he hoped Sehun’s wind had taken him away and Sehun was safe somewhere, away from this stranger in a silly looking cloak.

Instead he watched Sehun bleed.

Instead he watched Sehun died.

And two weeks after Sehun died, Jongin sat on the top of the stairway where he saw Sehun - his Sehun - the first time around. The same men who brought him into that dormitory was bringing in a new Sehun now, dressed exactly as his Sehun did the way he died. Just like Jongin wasn’t the first Kai, or even the second, for there were many Kais before him, this Sehun wasn’t the first Sehun or the second, for there were many Sehuns before him, including Jongin’s own.

It didn’t matter. This Sehun was still going to be someone else. This Sehun would never be the first Sehun. This Sehun would never be like the Sehun Jongin knew first.

But Jongin felt he was okay with that. Jongin smiled at him and let his black smoke take him away from the top of the stairway and to just a few steps in front of this Sehun.

He smiled brighter despite this Sehun’s confusion.

“Hello,” he started and without hesitation, he continued. “I’m Kai.”
