He woke up to a Daft Punk song playing in the next room and the smell of egg and toast filling the air despite his phone telling him it was a little past three in the afternoon on a Saturday.
It was summer, meaning he slept in nothing but his boxers, although in effort to avoid the streams of light that peeked through their blinds, he rolled himself into the plain white blanket, recently washed and still smelling faintly like the fabric softener his boyfriend accidentally dumped two brimming cups of into the washing machine on their last laundry day.
He didn’t understand the lyrics of the music that was played, but that didn’t matter because he found himself imagining how he could dance to it.
The dance in his head was new, although the song no longer was.
It was strange to think that lazy Saturday afternoons such as these were his to own every week. Strange to think that the Daft Punk song was his to dance to in his mind.
He wouldn’t have wished for it before.
The music stopped and the door creaked open. The scent of egg and toast filled every bit of the bedroom’s air.
“Are you awake?”
And it was strange to think, that that voice was his to listen to.
He gave a noncommittal grunt, finally tossing the blanket off his body to sleepily pull himself up against the headboard.
“Good morning,” his boyfriend cheerfully greeted with the toast and eggs, even though it was still three in the afternoon.
“Morning,” he replied.
It was strange to think, that the smile he saw graced his boyfriend’s face then belonged to him.
His boyfriend walked over and set breakfast on the side table, they balanced precariously there but he didn’t mind. They didn’t mind, as wordlessly, as if it was the surest thing to do, they leaned into a kiss - the kind that was chaste and quiet and fit Saturday afternoons such as these.
And with it, he knew this all belonged to him.
